Supporting Students in Science Learning

Summer Teacher Professional Learning Workshop Session Dates:

Dates & Times: July 5,6,7,12,13, & 14, 9am to 5pm daily at Queens Botanical Garden

Explore phenomenon-based learning with Queens Botanical Garden! The focus of this course is providing successful science experiences for students of varying backgrounds. As we examine the ins and outs of soils and how things sprout, we’ll explore our own and our students’ identities. You’ll leave this course having learned additional science content as well as methods for engaging and supporting students from traditionally marginalized populations. By the end of the class you will have backwards planned a unit of either phenomenon-based or problem-based instruction that you can use in your classroom.

About this event

This is 3P & A+ credit, 45 CTLE hour workshop meant for teachers of grades 3 through 8. If you are taking this course for P or A+ credits, please register and pay the $125 fee for P or A+ credits via ASPDP at https://pci.nycenet.edu/aspdp/Account/Login before paying this course fee.

Course fees of $250 may be paid beginning May 31, 2022. If you are solely registering for CTLE hours, please email teachereducation@queensbotanical.org to let us know.

Parking is included in this course fee.

If you are covid positive after the first workshop date the course instructors will discuss various options with you, including providing a refund or working with you to complete the course requirements.

Wheelchair Accessibility

Most garden grounds are wheelchair accessible. The Visitor and Administration Building, where the course takes place, is wheelchair accessible. Various areas in and around Flushing approximately within an approximate one mile radius of QBG will be explored during this workshop.

In the case that an event is cancelled, you will be notified via email.

By purchasing tickets and attending QBG events, you hereby opt in to receiving communications from the Garden. REFUNDS

You must cancel before July 3 or you will forfeit all fees. Cancellations before July1 will be refunded in full minus a $25 processing fee. Cancellations between July 1 and July 3 will be refunded in full minus a $35 processing fee. If you are covid positive or have a close contact, you will be refunded in full through the first workshop date. If you are covid positive after the first workshop date we will work with you to help you complete the course requirements.

PHOTOGRAPHY & VIDEOGRAPHY

Queens Botanical Garden (QBG) occasionally photographs or films visitors and activities both on and offsite (including virtually) to support our mission in promotional media and materials, including print, online, broadcast, and social media. You will be informed of any recordings and given the option of turning your camera off. By attending this event, you grant permission to QBG use your likeness in perpetuity, in all forms of print and digital media used to promote, publicize, or advertise the Garden, its activities, and programs. If you do not give QBG permission to take and use your image, you must notify an event organizer or staff. QBG cannot be held responsible for third-party outlets. QBG is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization.
